Counting and Cardinality Activities with Dinosaurs

I’ll share with you how we are learning and playing with Dinosaurs 🦕! My kids love dinosaurs, which gives me an excellent opportunity to use them to create engaging and fun lessons.

Dinosaurs Number Sense Game

Subitizing game with Dinosaur’s eggs.

Subitizing is one of the building blocks of number sense. It means being able to see a quantity of items, and instantly knowing how many. Recognizing quantities without having to count is a great foundation to building number sense. When students have number sense, they understand how numbers work, the relationships between them, and are able to use the numbers in real-world situations.

Counting Cards with Dinosaurs

Dino – puzzles (1-10)

Dino – clothespins cards (0-10)

I try to use different activities to practice counting. And variations of Counting cards help me with it. They are suitable for:

  • Count to tell the number of objects;
  • Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities;
  • Сonnect counting to cardinality.

Counting Mats to count Dinosaurs

We use counting mats with magnetic numbers, or dry-erase marker, or numbers-cards. Provide manipulatives (dinosaurs) that feature number names and number quantities.

By the way, children practice one-to-one correspondence when counting to 10;

This counting mat is an excellent tool for fine motor skills as well as counting.

Counting Dinosaurs with Lego Duplo

Dino – Lego Cards (1-10)

Represent the number of objects with the written numeral 1-10 and building small towers, counting each piece. I love this activity because my boys not just counting but also began to compare numbers with these lego towers.
